Background/History: Character Wiki

Strengths:
Loyal: There are a number of things to be said about the men of Fort Briggs but one of the first things that pops to mind is their steadfast loyalty. To each other, to their leader, to their country. You are very rarely going to find any group of people more loyal. This includes Miles who is the second in command of these men. He is there for them and everything he does is for them and for his country. He has even shown loyalty to his own heritage by refusing to kill Scar. Since they are both people of Ishval, he views the man as a brother rather than an enemy. People could offer him any number of things but will find that he will not turn his back on those he has sworn his life to unless those people are the ones who have given him reason to do so. One can be sure to trust Miles to have their back if he views them as a friend or ally.

One of the easiest ways to see that you can trust this man's loyalty is by looking at his position at Fort Briggs. Armstrong has him as her second in command. This is not a position she gives lightly because someone who is in such a position has to be a person that she can trust at all times. All times. That means even during the moments when it looked like he was somewhat taking care of Kimblee, he was in fact distracting the man under the orders of Armstrong. She believes in his loyalty so strongly that she leaves him in charge of the fort when she has to leave to go to Central.

Caring and Calm: Among the soldiers of Briggs, he is one of the calmest. They are a rambunctious lot but it's clear there's a lot of love shared among these men. He truly stands out by always having composure in any situation. This makes it easy for his orders to be followed since he stands out so strongly among those that are around him. This calm attitude allows him to see things others might miss, something that will be expanded in the next part.

With this, one will also notice that he is a person who deeply cares. About his country, about his heritage, about his men... This is a man who will die for any of these and who will go far to make sure that they are taken care of. The well being of those that he cares about matters a great deal to him and, while he might not always show it right away, the fact that he will rush to fight or defend someone counts for a great deal. Once can even notice a warmth to his smile when he shows it. He has seen a lot of pain in the world and a lot of cruelty but he has used that to keep himself as a caring person that fights against these wrongs. He lets himself be the wall that defends them as it were. A steady force they can rely on.

Observant: As previously mentioned, this is a man who takes in a lot. By not saying much when he's at the side of Armstrong, he is able to see things for her. To be her eyes. This lets him read a battlefield or even the type of person that someone is. Because of this, he can tell a lot about who someone is with a single glance and will be able to tell if he can trust that person. Or if it's a battle then he can find the weaknesses in order to strike them. One should never underestimate someone who is quiet because when someone is quiet they are witnessing the world around them. And that is what Miles does on a daily basis. For himself or even for his country or simply as a soldier. There is very little that slips past his observational skills which means that if something has then perhaps he wasn't there in the first place to witness it.

Open Eyes: There's a significant moment that Miles likes to call upon between him and Armstrong. Once he asked her why she would allow a man like him, one of Ishvalan ancestry, to serve under her. His people are hated and mistrusted everywhere but there she was allowing him to serve under her without question. Her response was that she didn't have time for prejudice and that she would fight him if he felt that he needed to treat her as an enemy. But there's another thing that she said that sticks with him to this day. Because of his multi-cultural background, he can see the world in ways that others aren't capable of doing. He knows of both sides of the story, has lived both sides.

He has his eyes open to the world in a way that others may not even be capable of simply because they haven't lived the same life he has. Weren't born into it. Where others might miss prejudice or overlook cruelties, he can see it. He can see it and he can do something about it by being where he is. This is something that means a great deal to him and he takes this very seriously by being Armstrong's eyes. As mentioned before with how observant he is, he keeps his eyes open to the world around him so he doesn't miss a thing. It's a valuable tool but also one of the strongest aspects of his personality since it gives him the chance to inspire change. An example being his desire to show that Ishvalans can be trusted and even to rebuild the people of Ishval.

Weaknesses:
Judgmental: There is a downside to these observational skills of his. That downside is that he's quick to assess and judge a person before they have even opened their mouths. While it's true that he's not likely to get these judgments wrong, it also means that if you want to prove him wrong then you have to work very hard at it. Because once he's made a decision about who you are as a person then you are essentially trapped like that. Largely because he has to make this quick decisions due to his position in the military as well as his position in Fort Briggs. There's no time for the luxuries of getting to know someone where he's from. It's assess and judge and move on. So good luck if he's judged you in an unfavorable light. If you think you deserve better then you've got a lot of work to do in order to show him that he's wrong.

Unforgiving: One of the worst things to have happened in the history of his world is the tragedy surrounding Ishval. An entire race of people, peaceful people, were brutalized by the military who had greater fire power. Since then the people of Ishval have been in decline, trying hard to just survive in a world that hates them.

Now, not every person in the military is someone that Miles hates. He knows that there are many who had no choice but to go and fight. Orders are orders. He knows also that many of these people live with the guilt daily over how this all went down and that they will for the rest of their lives. So, he doesn't hate these people at all. Who he does hate are those that enjoyed the murders they committed. People like Kimblee who took pleasure in destroying the lives of these innocent people and even going so far as to brutally destroy the lives of women and children as well.

Nothing anyone says or does will change his hatred for these people. He wants justice for these people and he allows his orders as a soldier to hold him back from killing them on the spot. But that doesn't mean he won't let them know that he's capable of ending them then and there. And that he wouldn't lose any sleep over the fact.

Misunderstood: Miles' genetics take strongly after his Ishvalan side. This means he looks just like one of them even though he's not full Ishvalan. This also means that he's largely misunderstood by the country he lives in simply because of his looks. He's had to deal with this for years now. One can usually find him wearing snow blindness glasses to hide his red eyes from the world when he's around others to prevent them from judging him on appearances alone. He knows what it's like to be judged this way and makes sure not to give people that chance.

Another way he can be misunderstood is that his calm attitude can sometimes be taken as aloof or cold. He's really neither of these things but is instead watching the world move around him, taking it all in. For people who aren't familiar with this side of him, it can easily be considered him being uncaring and ready to do something like sacrifice for the greater good. Really people just need to talk to him to find out that he's not at all like this and that there is a lot of depth to his person if you would just get to know him.

Of course, it should be made clear that he doesn't actually mind being misunderstood this way. That's fine with him. It can mean that he's being underestimated which can work in his favor. The trouble is that that being misunderstood can also mean that he's not helping with his dream of changing the views of Ishvalan people.

Ishval and Briggs First: This goes back to his sense of loyalty. However, here we discuss how it's also a major weakness for him. The reasoning behind it is largely that his loyalties tend to lean towards the people of Ishval and the men of Fort Briggs. Everything else can come second to all of this. So if you haven't already cemented an alliance with him it's entirely possible that he may put one of these two forces ahead of you simply because he cares more deeply about these people than about you.

It should be noted that this isn't out of cruelty or even a sign that he's uncaring. It's definitely neither of these. Rather, it's a sign that some simply are higher up on Miles' list of priorities than others. Because these people are his family. Basically you can look at it like this: Family comes first. Always. If you're not family then you had better hope that his family isn't in danger because there's a high chance he may do way it takes to take care of them before he takes care of you. It's literally nothing personal. Really. It just means you had better make sure you have inspired that kind of loyalty from him in advance or good luck if he has to pick between the two of you.

Fatal Flaw: His fatal flaw will probably be that he is easily angered by those who are cruel to others. He may not act on this anger, aware that there are better ways of handling situations, but after seeing what pleasure through cruelty did to the people of Ishval, did to his people, he is quick to be disgusted by and hate those that treat others this way. Or even suggest that might be the case. He is also not one to hide this hate and anger, willing to tell someone that he's capable of ending them where they stand because of it.

Again, he's not likely to always act. Sometimes there are better ways. But not acting on something and feeling that burning desire to end someone who is cruel are two very different things. Having Ishvalan ancestry has really cemented who he is as a person.

Driving Force: The driving force of this man is his desire to show people Ishval in a new light. These people are his ancestors and a huge part of his heritage. He knows the history of how they were essentially brutalized for being different. People fear the people of Ishval and so it is his greatest desire to show them that his people are not to be feared and can even be trusted. In doing so, he hopes to restore his people.

Patron: Miles is best suited for Minerva for a number of reasons. He's a very logical person who thinks rationally rather than emotionally. Even when he's angry and wanting to do something about it, he keeps a cool head to find the rational solution instead. Along with this, he's courageous like all the men at Fort Briggs. It honestly takes a lot of balls to just want to be stationed at that fort given how dangerous and hard it is to live there. Yet that's where he wants to be stationed for the time being. He's also quite contemplative, often found to be in thought as he watches things happening around him. Of course, he has a dark sense of humor which only comes out sometimes but that does make him witty too.

On the flip side he is remarkably unforgiving. Anyone who enjoyed the killing of the people of Ishval or even people who enjoy bringing harm to others are those he will immediately refuse to forgive. For any reason. This can make him quite hostile towards them. In a scene with Kimblee, he readily implies to him that he would gladly end him there in his bed and never regret the actions. And naturally he's terribly elitist. Anyone from Fort Briggs is really. They are the best and they know they are. Sure he respects the abilities of others but he has no problem informing you that his men at Briggs are still better than you. Good luck trying to prove him otherwise because you simply can't.

GAME INFORMATION

Setting Suitability: Miles is the second in command at Fort Briggs where the law is “survival of the fittest”. If you want to serve under Armstrong at Fort Briggs then you need to be the best or you die. So he's a soldier used to being one of the best soldiers around and even Hawkeye has commented that he and Buccaneer sweep the victories at military gatherings that have competitions. Not only that but he is used to facing harsh situations since he has had to do that from the day he was born since he inherited Ishvalan ancestry which is a race of people mistrusted and hated by most in his world. He is prepared to be in the world because he has to be prepared to be in this world.
